Although Brazil nuts are the richest selenium source they cannot be recommended as the main source for you to get it.
I can see so many practitioners recommending 2 Brazil nuts per day to get all the selenium you need but is it really confirmed by science? I’m afraid not!
The selenium content in Brazil nuts ranges from 0.03 to 512 mg/kg and it would be a Russian roulette for you every time in regards to how much you get. Selenium is one of the Goldilock nutrients and too much of it is not a good thing. We only need 200-400 micrograms per day and even this is a high dose recommended for Hashimoto’s disease. Brazil nuts can also be high in Barium which is toxic.
It really depends where Brazil nuts were grown because the selenium content of the soil varies.
I would really recommend doing HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) test to assess your mineral level and potential heavy metals in your body.
Meanwhile, organ meats and seafood are being said in studies to be the best sources of selenium. I would add targeted supplementation of selenium when you know your level, especially if you have thyroid disease.
